Frequently asked questions
-
Does my child need any experience with Dungeons & Dragons?
No. Our after-school programs are designed specifically for beginners. Every session assumes some players have never played before, and we teach the game naturally as we play.
What exactly is tabletop roleplaying?
Think of it as collaborative storytelling.
A small group creates a story together, with each player making decisions for their own character while a facilitator describes the world around them. There are no scripts, and nobody knows exactly how the story will unfold.
What age is KINHALL designed for?
Our introductory programs are designed for young people aged 9–18.
Programs are grouped by age so students are playing with peers at a similar stage and experience level.
Does my child need to bring anything?
No.
We provide the dice, character materials, maps and everything needed to play. Students only need to bring themselves and be ready to join the adventure.
What if my child has played before?
That's wonderful.
Experienced players are welcome in age-appropriate programs, although our introductory sessions are designed so beginners never feel left behind.

What happens during a typical session?
Each session begins with the group returning to their shared adventure. The facilitator introduces a new challenge or continues the story from the previous week, and the players decide what their characters do next.
Every session includes storytelling, decision-making, problem-solving and plenty of unexpected moments.
How long are sessions?
Most after-school sessions run for 75 minutes.
That gives enough time for the story to develop while fitting comfortably into an after-school schedule.
How many students are in a group?
We keep groups intentionally small.
Most programs have a maximum of 12 students . When we sit down at a table to roleplay, we ensure there are no more than six students to a facilitator, so every player has an opportunity to participate.
Do students play the same story every week?
Yes.
Each program is a continuing adventure that unfolds over several weeks. Characters remember what happened, decisions have consequences, and the story grows with the group.
Can my child join after the program has started?
Sometimes.
If there's space and it's early in the term, we may be able to help a student join an existing group. If not, we'll recommend the next available program.
-
Is Dungeons & Dragons appropriate for children?
Yes.
KINHALL uses age-appropriate adventures designed for children and teenagers. Our focus is on imagination, teamwork, exploration and creative problem-solving, with content suited to the age of each group.
Is there violence in the game?
Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy adventure game, so adventures can include imaginary monsters, villains and battles — much like children's fantasy books, films and video games.
KINHALL adventures are designed and facilitated appropriately for the age of each group. We don't use graphic descriptions of violence, and fighting is never the only way to solve a problem.
Players can negotiate, investigate, persuade, hide, escape, trick someone, make a deal or invent a solution we hadn't anticipated.
Often, those are the most memorable parts of the story.
My child is shy. Will they have to perform or act?
Not at all.
Some children enjoy speaking in character. Others simply describe what their character does in their own words. Both approaches are completely normal, and students participate in ways that feel comfortable for them.
My child doesn't know anyone else. Is that okay?
Absolutely.
One of the nice things about tabletop roleplaying is that everyone arrives with a shared purpose. The adventure gives students something to work on together from the very beginning, making it easier to get to know one another naturally.
Is KINHALL suitable for different personalities and interests?
Very much so.
Some players love storytelling, some enjoy puzzles or strategy, others like drawing maps, keeping notes or finding creative solutions. There are lots of different ways to contribute to a game.
What if my child needs additional support?
We want every child to have a positive experience.
Please let us know about any information that will help us support your child during the booking process, and we'll discuss whether the program is the right fit and how we can help.
Who runs the sessions?
KINHALL programs are led by adult facilitators experienced in tabletop roleplaying and working with young people.
All facilitators hold current Working with Children Checks and follow KINHALL's child safety policies and code of conduct.
What child safety practices does KINHALL follow?
Creating a safe, respectful environment is fundamental to every KINHALL program.
Our facilitators follow clear child safety procedures, behaviour expectations and communication guidelines, and we work in partnership with participating schools.
